In Case You Missed It: Bankrupting the Business of Human Trafficking<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

We had an incredible insight into the business of human trafficking and how various
sectors including the financial industry, government, United Nations and health care
industry are forming partnerships to prevent human trafficking before it begins.<\/p>\n

Highlights:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Counsellor Marissa Blackette (Sovereign Order of Malta Permanent Mission)<\/em><\/strong> – “The
    question we must ask is: Why would traffickers stop if the financial incentives outweigh the
    risks?”<\/li>\n
  2. Deputy Director General Ugochi Daniels (International Organization for Migration)<\/strong><\/em>– We
    must develop and facilitate safe passage for migrants, as traffickers take advantage and
    make money off of humanitarian crises.<\/li>\n
  3. Che Sidanius and Ruth Alves da Mota (LSEG Risk Intelligence)<\/em><\/strong>– The importance of
    financial and risk analyses in developing profiles of human traffickers. Regarding the South
    African findings, it indicates that 61% of the men identified as perpetrators were seen as
    the \u201cmasterminds\u201d and 24% employed by religious institutions.<\/li>\n
  4. Kishor Harri (South Africa Financial Intelligence Centre)<\/em>–<\/strong> Described how the Financial
    Intelligence Centre and the Public Private Partnership improve the effective use of financial
    intelligence to assist in human trafficking investigations.<\/li>\n
  5. Dr. Janet Bastiman (Napier AI)-<\/strong><\/em> Described organized crime’s process to stay ahead of the
    law by exploiting financial institutions and using data to their advantage.<\/li>\n
  6. Deborah O’Hara Rusckowski (Sovereign Order of Malta Permanent Mission)<\/strong><\/em>– “Studies
    have shown that 88-92% of victims seek emergency medical care while being trafficked.”
    Described how the professional observation of human trafficking symptoms can also be
    used for measuring prevalence at the local level.<\/li>\n
  7. Rosalee Keech (CSTIP)<\/strong><\/em>– Described the next steps as working with the financial industry,
    law enforcement, government and religious institutions to implement bankrupting the
    business of human trafficking processes that improve data sharing and end impunity for
    traffickers, especially those working within trusted institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
